The Consultation Letters of Dr William Cullen (1710-1790) at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
[ID:5488] From: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / To: Mr John Johnstone (Jock; of Alva) / Regarding: Miss Elizabeth Johnstone (Betty; Mrs Betty; Johnston; of Westerhall) (Patient), Miss Ann Elizabeth Johnstone (Betty) (Patient) / 17 July 1787 / (Outgoing)
Letter to John Johnstone of Alva, concerning the case of his sister and his daughter, both Miss Johnstone. Cullen now advises the use of an injection to relieve the elder Betty's bowels, as well as the laudanum. For little Betty's nosebleeds, he writes that 'the Blood stone necklace is a very innocent remedy, but more certainly I dont believe that it will have any effect in preventing the bleeding': however, 'with the help of her imagination, it may do something to stop it', and he has heard that making patients drink water into which the bloodstone has been dipped may work. He asks for more information as to how much blood she is losing via her nose.
