[DOC ID:6154] |
Letter from John Johnstone of Alva concerning the case of his sister (Miss Betty), who has improved since Cullen's visit, and his daughter. He is going to Ballindean to fetch his (great)nieces, the Wedderburns of Ballindean, for a visit. Date inferred from circumstantial evidence. | 6? July? 1787
[DOC ID:3062] |
Letter from C. Johnstone (probably George Johnstone's widow, Deborah Charlotte, known as Charlotte), concerning the case of her sister-in-law, Betty Johnstone. The family is concerned about her health, and the writer, who asks Cullen to reply c/o Betty's brother William (Johnstone) Pulteney at Bath House, Piccadilly, says that she hopes to visit her if "she is not in immediate danger". | 11 July 1787
[DOC ID:3053] |
etter from John Johnstone of Alva, concerning his sister Betty (here unnamed), who suffers from numbness and from pain in the bowels. He also reports on his daughter, also known as Betty, who suffers from a cough, accompanied by nosebleeds and vomiting. | 14 July 1787
[DOC ID:3197] |
Letter from John Johnstone of Alva concerning his sister and daughter. Date inferred as the Monday following his previous letter was 16 July. The elder Miss Betty is now suffering headaches, and he wonders if the weather is to blame. Little Betty is still suffering from nosebleeds, 'therefore this morning I put the Bloodstone Necklace around her neck', but so far it is not stopping the bleeding. | 16? July? 1787?
[DOC ID:5485] |
Letter to John Johnstone of Alva concerning his sister and his daughter. Cullen has little further advice for the elder Miss Johnstone's numb limb, other than rubbing and exercise in a carriage. Regarding the little girl's cough and nosebleeds, he thinks there is 'no danger from the disease', but suggests washing her face in cold water or applying linen dipped in cold water to her forehead to arrest the nosebleeds. | 16 July 1787
[DOC ID:3057] |
Letter from George Moncrieff, concerning the cases of Miss Bell, about whom Cullen had spoken with Lady Holemain (Holmains), and Mrs Johnstone. | 17 July 1787
[DOC ID:5488] |
Letter to John Johnstone of Alva, concerning the case of his sister and his daughter, both Miss Johnstone. Cullen now advises the use of an injection to relieve the elder Betty's bowels, as well as the laudanum. For little Betty's nosebleeds, he writes that 'the Blood stone necklace is a very innocent remedy, but more certainly I dont believe that it will have any effect in preventing the bleeding': however, 'with the help of her imagination, it may do something to stop it', and he has heard that making patients drink water into which the bloodstone has been dipped may work. He asks for more information as to how much blood she is losing via her nose. | 17 July 1787
