Mr. David Maclean

I acknowledge the receipt of all your three
letters and am heartily [vexed?] to find that the answer
I wrote to yours of the 6th.. March has never come to
your hand and I shall now make the best amends
for it I can.

Your case is truly a different one both in account
of the State of your fluids and nerves and the Cure of both
must be attempted by sweetening the one and strengthening
the other but both will require time and patience that
your stomach will bear is very uncertain but I advise
you to quit your own house and go for a month or
more to a place where you can have good Goat whey
and take what of this your stomach easily bears
both in the mornings and evenings beginning with
a small quantity and increasing it by degrees.
This I think will be the most effectual means
of sweetening your blood and though it should like

[Page 2]

other things at first seem to raise [some heat?] {illeg}
your bowels I beg however you may not cease to
give it a full trial. If it proves windy it will
be proper for you to take along with the first
draught in the morning a tea spoonful of the
Powder of prepared Crabs Eyes. I cannot positively
order the other parts of your diet in the present
[peculiar?] state of your stomach but I would reco¬
mend a little mild Animal food and as much
milk and things made of grain as you can easily
bear. It will be of consequence for you to be much
in the fresh air and walking about as much as
you can bear without fatigue and if could go
frequently on horseback it would be still much
better. It is air and exercise that will be your
best Strengtheners but I am of your own opinion
that you might also be much the better for
Cold bathing and to bring you to bear it I advise
you to proceed in this manner. Take four parts

of Spring or Seawater and put to it immediately
before you are to use it one part of the boiling water.
While this tempered water is got ready lay off
your Cloaths and sitting down ↑upon a stool↑ in a tub with Towels
dipped in the tempered water let your body be
washed all over. When this is fully done let
your skin again be well dried, put on your
ordinary Cloaths and walk about pretty briskly
for a quarter or half an hour. This will answer
for a cold bathing and may be repeated every mor¬
ning but as you repeat it every second day
let an Eight part of the boiling water be kept
out so that in the couse of the fortnight you
will use the cold water alone and by this
be prepared to bear the Sea bathing {illeg} if
it is at hand every day and I cannot put you
in a better method for strengthening and
cooling your whole body and bowels and you
[till?] you try this course of Goat whey & [bathing?]

[Page 4]

for the time proposed I would dissuade you from
[meddling?] with Drugs of any kind.

I believe you have been very much hurt by
dampness and may be so still but there is no Phy¬
sic for that but in providing an absolutely dry
Lodging. Wishing you heartily relief I am

Your most Obedient Servant
