Etall House June [the?] 3 --
1787
I am persuaded it will give you Pleasure
to hear that your Patient, Lady Augusta Hay
continues free from all complaints, except
when she is in a Carriage, the motion of which
occasions her a pain in her right side,
but she is able to walk [ahead?] twice every
day without being fatigued, and looks in the
most perfect health. --- I am however
sorry to inform you that my Eldest Daughter
Lady Charlotte is not so well as I could wish,
and as there is nobody in whose Judgment
I have so much confidence as yours, I give
you the trouble of this letter on her account;
[Page 2]
a short time before, we left Edinburgh she had a
very violent Cold, attended with a severe Rheu¬
matic Head-Ach, and a considerable degree
of Fever, however to appearance she soon
got well, but as she now tells me, has never
recovered her strength, and is very soon fatigued
with either a Carriage, or Horseback, & feels
a kind of sickness after that exercise, even
more than after walking; - she has neither
Coughs, pain in her side, her [feet?], her
bowels [are?] in the state you would wish them,
& she is regular in every other day, yet her
Colour is so entirely gone, & her Eyes so
languid, that I cannot help being very
anxious about her, altho' she assures me
that her only complaint is weakness, and
[Page 3]
a degree of Sickness, which does not seem to
proceed from her Stomach, but is a kind
of faintness; - after the description I have
given of her complaints, if you wish to feel
the state of her Pulse, I will certainly send
her to Edinburgh, or if you will send out any
Prescription of Medicine or regimen, it
shall be Particularly followed, as I feel myself
very uneasy about her, and shall hope for
an answer to this as soon as you conveniently
can - her Spirits are very good, & her appetite
tolerable, I therefore flatter myself that she will
soon be restored to Greatest health.
I am with great regard Sir
Your most humble Servant
