Case of Mrs Reddie, given advice for a stomach complaint associated with a recent pregnancy. Mentions consulting Cullen earlier in March 1773. No letters traced from that date, but a letter of 23 December 1773 almost certainly concerns this patient.

A Lady aged twenty seven during her first pregnancy in the
year Sixty Eight was attacked with a violent pain in her Stomach
which continued for some hours - But returned periodically for some time
(once a week) when in July of said year She was safely delivered
She afterwards had two female Children without any Return of the like
Complaint - In January last about two or three days before a Safe
delivery of a son, was severily attacked with the former disorder -
A surgeon being immediately called, let a few ounces of Blood from the arm
ordering at same time an opiate which in some degree palliated the Complaint
but procured no Sleep - Continued for Some days after delivery in a good
way, till a Severe pain in one of her Breasts came on attended with high
Inflammation which ended in a plentifull Suppuration, & healed kindly -
some Short time thereafter her former complaint returned in a most Excruci¬
ating manner, which yielded not to medicines tho in various fforms applied both
Externally & Internally, & this according to Indication of the present Symptoms
as observed by the attending Surgeon - She continued periodically affected
in this way till sometime in April last when she Recovered her pristine
state of health --- In the beginning of last October being then in the
fourth month of her present pregnancy She was attacked with a Return
of her former complaint tho less violent & of a few days duration -

She is just Now in the Sixth Month of her pregnancy, and
during the absence of her forementioned Stomach Complaint, is generally
healthy, tho delicate; very cheerful, & to all appearance in a good habit
of body, but Costive which She says is commonly removed by one of Dr.
Anderson's pills
-

About Six days ago She had a most Severe Return of her disorder, which
Resisted every application - Carminatives, Opiates, gentle Stomachics, and
Clysters have been tryed to no effect - During the continuance of her
Complaint She Slumbers periodically but without any seeming Refreshment.
Continues ffeverish for the space generally of twenty four hours when her
disorder entirely disappears for some days

Her disorder begins with a Severe pain in her Stomach, which She says
Swells, (th'o [imperaplible?]) 1 previous to this a violent pain is felt in the
Loins & Belly occuppying the whole of the umbilical Region - During

this time She is in the utmost agony - When the pain leaves her
Stomach it Reattacks the forementioned places, but more particularly the
Sides - After the pain above Specified a violent
Headach ensues. Last Night She was much troubled with flatulent
Eructations - Had some Carminative Drops in which were Tincture of Castor
after the Exhibition of which She vomited a quantity of Bilious Stuff,
and this morning is found feverish, Sleeped some in the Night & is Now
tolerably free of pain, but a Relapse is dreaded - -

December 24th
All yesterday and Night had pains as above tho not so violent,
Slumbered a good deal, was somewhat ffeverish & drank considerably
of Toast and Water Acidulated with a little Jelly, in this State She continued
till two o'Clock this Morning, being at this time Restless & attacked with
two or three Shivering fitts tho of Short duration & which terminated
in a Sweat with a vomiting before & after - So this day in a
[Brisk?] ffever, an aggreeable Sweat just now offers, with some Inclination
to Sleep
- Thirst still Continues -
