Doctor Cullen
Sir

agreable to your order of May 26th at my
return here I sent for Mr Young the surgeon of our
Family and gave him your Prescriptions and acordingly
he prepared the Medicines which I have taken regularly
since till within is 3 days and in which I have Drunk
Goates milk morning and Evening about a mutchskin each
time --

I have not taken a great quantity of the Electury
as I found a small quantity were sufficient to give me one
2 or 3 stools a day - every other night I took the
Anodyne & Injection the Effects of the Injection on night
I retained it till morning and all other times about
3 & 4 hours when it came of as for the anodyne it never
had any affect on me in causing me to sleep which I'm in
frequent want of ocasioned by the
frequent Irritations
and what sleep I have is generaly in the morning

As you recommended Milk I have used it pretty freely and as
I had an opurtunity have used Goates milk looking on
it preferable to others and when taken morning & Evening has
the Effect of giving me several stools in the day ---

At Dinner I Mostly have Drunk about half a glas rum with some
water and the same at night - food I mostly have had
for Dinner Chicken or Lamb

My stools of late seems more of Natural Colour although mostly
[straiked?] with Blood & when is Inclined to be bound comes
away about sise of small Plumbs 7 or 8 in Number
just as [were?] 1 Dipt in Blood & Slime of a ropish nature

I also observe my disorder has intervals as every other day & sometimes
the 3d day I will be worse than at other times and have frequent
Irritations or motions and what matter comes away is like
blood and matter & of such a sharp and viscid nature

[Page 2]

that it will perfectly scald & take of the skin where it comes
& makes me very low and weak.

When Im best what matter comes seems whitish about thicknes
of cream, and just such as comes from a common boile or
[Biles?]
without any blood

And on the Whole I cannot say any better but raither frequenter
Irritations both day & Night and the vastest quantity of
explosions of wind
that can be thought on so frequent that
I am seldom capable of going into any Company and the wind will
come [ont?]
with so much heat as my inward parts were burning
Whither the Goates Milk or not can ocasion so much heater
wind you must be best judge of --

As for strawberrys as yet I have not been able to get any but hopes to
get some soon when I purpose to take about an English
quart each day at 2 Diffrent times and shall write you their
Effect ---

I hope youll further take my case into
consideration & write me per course of post which
I shall thankfully pay at my Return to Edinburgh

I am Sir your most obedient & Humble Servant
James Dalzell
