The Consultation Letters of Dr William Cullen (1710-1790) at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh

[ID:668] From: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / To: Dr John Alves / Regarding: Mr James Murray Sutherland (Sutherland of Clyne and Pulrossie) (Patient) / 16 November 1784 / (Outgoing)

Reply, 'Sutherland of Clyne', probably addressed to John Alves. Cullen fears that the patient ('an old acquaintance of mine') has left it too long to follow his suggestion to go to Inverness, but gives advice for his treatment all the same. For his paralysis, 'I have nothing to propose but a trial of Electricity which I believe he cannot have north of Inverness.' He also suspects a kidney stone.

Sutherland of Clyne
Dear Sir

Mr Sutherland is an old acquaintance of
mine and if he had followed all the advice I have given him
he would have been better in every respect than he is at present.

It is long since I advised him to come to Inverness but
I am afraid he has been too late in [doing?] it. His paralytic
symptoms
I am afraid ↑are not↑ to be mended and with a view to them
I have nothing to propose but a trial of Electricity which I be¬
lieve he cannot have north of Inverness.

It is long since I suspected a stone in his kidneys and you
have now put it past doubt that it has been there and probably
more will be bred there. I see that I formerly advised him to
use the Bear Berry but I know not that ever he did. Just now I
would advise the Caustic Lixivium for which I need not offer you
any particular directions but must tell you that I have had
considerable success in alternating the Lixivium and the Bear Berry month about. If you can get Clyne to try it he may be
the better for it. I am with great regard Dear Dr. ––––
