For Mrs Morison.
The case of Mrs Morrison which you have given
me so fully & accurately I have considered carefully &
am sorry that I cannot make a favourable prognostic with
regard to it: From the frequent child bearing & long continu¬
ance of gtgreat evacuations her constitution must now be greatly
impaired & from the nature of the evacuations as they have
appeared of late. the Uterine System must be in
a bad condition. Upon this footing all her symptoms
may be understood. & I cannot percieve in these any
foundation for suspecting any thing venereal & your account of
it is very improbable.
In the view I have of the case I think your aperient
Bolus to be one of the most probable remedies & ad¬
vise it to be continued so the degree that she easy bears. The
Laudanum may be unavoidable but it does no ser¬
vice to the disease & I would avoid it as much as pain will
any ways allow. It is certainly hurtfull as it occasionally
costiveness & this must be obviated as much as possible.
The medicine I would prefer for this purpose is the Oleum
Ricini if her Stomach will bear it. & if not, the best & least
irritating will be the Flowers of Sulphur or Crystal Tartar To¬
wrds the cure of the disease you must depend upon the Bolus
but 2 measures may be farther necessary. One is to
manage her diet, motion & her posture so as to give as
little visitation to the System in general & to the Uterus
in particular as possible. It is common in such cases to
give wine & animal food but the more weak the
person is the more pernicious. The other measure
is the use of some strengthening medicines & I think the Alum
Russian oleum illegible one of the best as it neither heats the
body nor binds the Belly. You will employ it as
circumstances
