For Mr Smart at Wark
in Northumberland. –––

Mr Smarts ailments evidently depend upon gravel in
his kidney & they most probable means of preventing it (↑them↑) for the
time to come is by the use of the Lixivium ordered below. It is
to be taken in broth & it is by the broth that the dose of the
Lixivium (↑liquor↑) is to be determined & It is therefore necessary that the
broth should be made at all times exectly of the same strength
and it may be done as follows. X Take four ounces of lean beef
cut it small & put it into three pints (↑four muchkins↑) of cold water. Set it
over the fire & let it boil until one pint (↑two muchkins↑) are boiled away, then take it from
the fire & pass it thro a cloth. If at any time there happens to be boiled
away than enough let it be supplied by boiling water, so that it remains
exactly one {illeg} quart. If when the broth cools any fat appears upon it let it be
taken way. It will be best to have this broth made fresh every day & (↑or↑)
at least every second day. When it is made only every second ↑day↑ let the half that
is to be reserved for next day, be set by & covered ↑up↑ in a cold place ---
When the broth is cooled before the time of using it, it must be again a
little warmed when it is to be taken with the Lixivium (↑Solution↑) which must be
done in this manner. - Take half a pint (↑muchkin↑) of the broth & put into it
about forty drops of the liquour or
as many drops of the the Lixivium (↑it↑) as the broth will cover the taste & this
you are to do for a fortnight & if then it it is found to agree very well
with your stomach, the dose may be taken three times a day, that is an
hour before breakfast as well as before dinner & Supper.* -- This course
↑is↑ to be continued for six weeks (↑a month↑) ↑X↑ & after you have taken it a month
I would wish to be informed of its affects that I may then advise your
future conduct. During this course you must drink no wine or other
fomented liquours & no you must take no punch with out souring

so you must be reduced to spirits & water with very little Sugar.

In Diet you must avoid the free use of pickles, lemon or Vinegar. You
must be sparing of all garden things, & you may take any plain meat you
like best, but the ↑lighter and↑ plainer the better, & you may take any kind of pudding.
You may also take fish but seldom & sparingly. Salted meat of all
kinds must be avoided. You will be the better of being in the
fresh air, but you must take any kind of execise very gently & you
must be particularly carefull in guarding against cold.

Mr Taylor

Take twelve ounces of caustic Lixivium put into four well-covered bowls. Label: Antinephritic Liquour

Take half-an-ounce of powdered flowers of Uva Ursi and make into twenty-eight doses as required
