For Mrs H. of W.
Madam

I am sorry to have lost a post in writing to you for I am
very impatient to do what is in my power to relieve all your complaints -
I think I now understand them perfectly well & the first thing I am to
advise is to keep your Belly regular & easy -- I am sorry the sulphur
does not answer for it for it is one of the best & or safest means. As you
do not bear it you must try Andersons Pills & if it does not gripe or
purge you, you should take a Pill frequently so as to prevent Costiveness
rather than have it to cure. If you can easily take Oil I have an
excellent remedy to send you which I lately received from the West Indies
& I am sure there is no where I shall bestow it with so much pleasure
& tho it is scarse & ill to be had nobody shall have any part of it while you
have occasion for it. Please order your Carrier to call ↑for it↑ next week
and my wife shall have it ready to give him it with its directions --

If you can prevent costiveness I hope all your complaints shall be easier
but that is not enough and till thirteen week or more are fully past
you must have much attention to your conduct. Walking excepting
in the gentlest manner & for a short time only is very bad for you
going a little in the chaise is very allowable but it ought to be always
slowly & if possible a smooth road After Eleven Weeks you must lay
aside all sort of Exercise & lye very much on your couch you should
at other times lye down whenever the pain of your Back is troublesome
whatever Exercise or motion raises raise that pain is likely to do you harm

In the Eleventh or twelfth week if you feel warm are easily fluster'd or
perceive your veins full you may let a little blood from your Arm, but let
it be only a little at first & no more afterwards unless you find great relief from
the first.

[Page 2]

From this time forward I would have you keep your diet rather
low you must avoid the windy Vegetables except you find a considerable
inclination for them & no trouble after ↑taking↑ them but at the same time be
sparing of meat & fish & take only the lightest kinds. If you know
what is favourable for keeping your belly easy that I would particularly
prefer. For drink I think small beer or a little porter should be the
best but in this & in the quantity of your strong drink you must consult
your stomach. I think the best wine for you is claret if your stomach bear
it but I am ready to believe that of any kind of wine the lest the better -
In every respect keep yourself cool avoid the sun warm chambers and many
bed cloaths. By all this management I hope you shall avoid a miscarrige
& whenever you are in another way than the present I hope we cant
take other measures for strengthening your constitution & putting you
out of the necessity of living Physically
