For Miss Marshall
A difficult case, so consider and irritability of stomach, confirmed by long
habit --- If I did not reckon it a Chlorotic symptom to be removed by
the flowing of the Menses. I should have little hope. I cannot advise
so properly without knowing the medicines she has tried & how bears them,
the effects, & how she bears the medicines I am to propose. You must
therefore continue to correspond with me.
For removing the irritability of ye stomach nothing equal to Opiate. Therefore
an hour before dinner take 50 drops of the Stomachic drops ordered below,
dropt on a bit of sugar. If they do not make her retain her food
better, may increase the dose gradually till 100. If the Elixir proprietatis
give pain, must try a mixture of 2 parts of spt. of lavender
x 1 part of Tinct. Thebaic. & give a proportional dose of this in
the same manner as the other. Unless the effects of one or
other, be good do not employ them constantly but pro re nata.
I guess you have been thinking giving the Vitr. acid in one shape
or other, I think it a proper medicine & should be continued With
these remedies for the stomach keep the belly regular As you have
employed some remedy of this kind, employ those that you
find answer best. With a view to Menstruation, you should
use frequent glysters with asafoetida dissolved in them. For the
same purpose I would frequently set her feet & legs in warm water
& let them continue in it for {illeg} (↑hald↑) and hour. about an hour or two
before going to bed. Then dry them well & keep them
warm till she go to bed. In bed should wear worsted stock¬
ings & if these are not sufficient for heat, boiled bricks to
the foot of her bed. Every morning rub her feet & legs [each?]
with a flesh brush or flannel, gently but long continued. And
if of [these?] the day her feet be cold, must one way or other be
brought to heat again.
Walking in the fresh air
[Page 2]
is good, but be moderate, & no fatigue. In fine weather
& when convenient, riding on horseback great service, kee¬
ping however her feet & legs warm & dry. Cannot advise
a particular diet without knowing what more or less agrees or dis¬
agrees with her, but in general, bring her from a vegetable
to a {illeg} solid diet ---
For Miss Marshall
