For M.r Aiton


1. Let him take every night at bedtime, two of the Aperient
pills
ordered below, If they do not disturb his stomach he may
take three or four for a dose, and the use of them is to be continued
for two or three weeks. 2. If these pills keep his belly open he
need take any other physic but seldom, but, if the pills do not at
all move him, let him take every fourth day, the Electuary
ordered below, which should move him two or three times, and
if it does either more or less the dose should be diminished or in¬
creased. 3. With these Medicines he should use a spare diet,
abstaining very much from Animal food, and particularly from
fish, Eggs, Cheese, salted meat & swines flesh, and all sort of

spiceries except Mustard - 4. For drink on the days he takes
physic, he should take fresh drawn cow Milk whey. On other days he
may take small beer, but must abstain from every other kind of
fermented or spiritous liquor, and particularly the last. On the days
he does not take physic he may take butter Milk if tolerably
fresh - 5. He must avoid walking as much as possible, and ever
very much riding especially for a long Journey at one time. He should
very constantly wear laced stockings and they will allow him to
walk with more safety, but if even with these he finds his feet and
legs full & stiff towards night he must consider his walking as too
much. Whenever he is at home for the evening he should lie down
on a bed or couch and lay up his legs level with his body -
6. Every second or third night, oftener or seldomer, as the fulness stif¬
fness
or itchings of the legs require, he should set his feet and legs in
warm milk and water for half an hour taking care to dry them
very well after, and going immediately after into bed, at the same
time anointing the hot and itching parts with the lina↑i↑ment ordered
below
