Penrith 12th. September
Sir

When at Moffatt Wells I took a trip
over to Edinburgh, at the time of Leith Races 1 , and made
application to you, on Account of a Scrophuloous breaking
out on my Hands, your Prescription was, Ung. Citrin
Axung Porcin half and ounce of each and mix. The bigness of a Horse Bean to
be rubb'd on each Hand at Bed-time, & also to continue
at Moffatt for three Weeks longer, which I regularly did
but to no purpose, Now as you were so obliging as to
say, if the above did not Answer the purpose intended
(but you hoped it would) a further prescription should
be Wrote me Gratis, after my return Home; therefore
shall take it as a singular Favor, if you'll Indulge
me, in further prescribing what you may think
necessary & 'twill particularly Oblige

Your very humble Servant at Command

September 1783
V. XV. p. 259.

Notes:

1: Horse races, held over a week, conducted on Leith sands since the time of the Reformation. There were Spring and Autumn meets so it is difficult to establish a precise date for Fallowfield's trip. The carnivalesque, sometimes riotous atmosphere is captured in Robert Fergusson's poem "Leith Races", which influenced Burns.
