Sir

I had your much esteemed favour of the 28th aprile but it was
sometime after that before Mr Campbell coud get the Course prescribed by you
attended to, but when he began he continued it very Clossly untill you
saw him in June when I suppose he gave you a full account himself
of what had been done & the effects -

You woud no doubt be surprised at that time that
I did not write you along with him but I declare I did not hear of his
going to Edinburgh untill he put your second letter into my hand of date
the 29th Ultimo since which time he has also followed your Rules as
to medicine very pointedly but Im not so certain that he has adhered
so strickly to them in point of Diet &c. --

He has in his Decoction made use of about six ounces of mezereon
Root
since he began it, with the proportion of sarsaparilla you ordered, and
has taken for these three weeks bypast the Solution of Carrow Seeds
and continued the Camphorated oil Untill within these five days
that he left of off ↑the oil↑ without my knowledge --

Im sorry to tell you that notwithstanding of all that
has been done the appearances on the scrotum are much worse It is
scaley & Cracked in many places at which Cracks there is a discharge
of thin Ichor
& these are very painfull to him with a kind of burning
pricking heat
, & this appearance has extended itself over part of the
penis a large spott of which is on the prepuce & the scot scrotum appears
as if it was thickened considerably, but the parts at present Are gone off.

I can scarce think that there can be any
Venereal Taint remaining after the long continued Courses (I may
say) of mercury with the Decoction of the Woods & Sarsaparilla ↑before you saw him↑ & the other powerfull
remedies prescribed by you since that time ---

I shall follow out your prescriptions pointedly
untill I have the pleasure of hearing from you again and what farther
advice you give me shall be adhered to stricktly

Please tomorrow

I am sorry as yet I have it not in any power to say any thing of Mr
Scots hearing as he only began your prescription last Sunday
I shall be happy he gets the better of his deafness but I fear it much
because his mother & some of his other relations are in the same
way & they are a scrophulous family --- and I am with great Esteem

Sir
your most obedient humble servant
David Colquhoun
