Your opinion and Advice is desir'd
for Mrs: Stephenson; a Lady rather corpu¬
lent and upwards of sixty, who was attack'd
about 10 years ago (soon after the Cessation
of her Menses) with a violent spasmodic
Asthma, which was then reliev'd by Bleed¬
ing and Anodynes; but, from that Period,
she has been subject to repeated Attacks
and for some Time past has labour'd
under a continued one, which from Cold
and other accidentally Causes frequently
increases to a great Degree, never abating
'till she looses a little Blood and takes
a few Doses of the Lac ammoniacum; she
then expectorates large Quantities of Phlegm
which naturally indicates the occasional
[Page 2]
use of Vomits, yet she constantly refuses
from the Remembrance of the Violence
of an emetic operation some Time since -
This Disorder and frequent Uneasiness
from passing small gravel have for
these eight or nine Months brought on
great Debility, Lowness of Spirits & Loss
of appetite; she can with Difficulty
be prevail'd upon to use Exercise either
on Horseback or in her Carriage, yet her
Pulse is regular & good, nor does she
appear much shrunk - Her Weakness
seems to me to proceed from Anxiety
about her Complaints and the Idea
that she has acquir'd of labouring under
what she calls "an inward Decay" --
Her Urine's in proper Quantity, varying it's
appearance, sometimes pale, at other
Times depositing a yellow (↑reddish↑) sediment, nor is
[Page 3]
there any apparent Tendency to Anasarca.
The Medicines, she is now taking, are
the Vinum Amarum and opening Pills
of Extractus Catharticus for if she suffers her¬
self to be costive, she then has great
Fulness in her Chest; her Legs swell
a little and every Complaint is worse -
Her Food has always been simply dress'd
and she has reluctantly taken two or
three Glasses of Wine in the Day, never
suffering much from Thirst --
Bark was once try'd but occasion'd tight¬
ness in her Breast - I shall be oblig'd
to you for your Answer & inclose a [Drat:?]
upon {illeg} No: 5 Mansion House Street.
in the meantime remain with great Esteem
