Alnwick July 31. 1779.
Sir
Geo. Hall who is the Bearer of this
has for near 12 Months past laboured under
complaints in his Stomach & bowels attended
with flatulency & pain which are worst at
Night & after eating -- for which He began
last winter to take Stomachic bitters and laxative
Medicines as He was always worst when costive
but these offered no relief He then tried Guaiac.
with antimonials & small doses of calomel
on a supposition that his case might be
rheumatic but none of these after a fair tryal
were of service -- He afterwards tried Valerian
& the fœtid Gums & last of all He took an
Electuary of Sal. diuretic. with [Almcy?] and an
aperient Decoction of Gramin. Petroselin,
asparag., Fœnic dulc. &c. But still the com¬
plaints increase upon Him --- Some blood
was taken to see its state & it was no way
sizy, viscid or inflam'd but rather in the
other extreme. He has been a hard working
Man & formerly had some rheumatic compalints
but was always temperate in eating and
drinking. It is by my advice that He waits upon
you Sir & I hope & wish you may relieve Him.
I am your most obedient humble Servant
