[ID:1539] From: Mr John Love / To: [ADDRESSEE UNKNOWN] / Regarding: Mr John Love (Patient) / July? 1778? / (Incoming)
Unsigned letter from J. Love, in Paisley, describing his own case. Undated, but annotated as July 1778. Begins with symptoms and the becomes a series of questions, as suggesting this is a note Love sent to Cullen in advance of the personal meeting he mentions elsewhere. Love's faded handwriting and erratic spelling renders some words difficult to decipher.

Bad digiestion
Short & languid [Hexpiry?]
Great pains in the Bowels and Back especially
about the >left pap, where I am the least warmly
and a Breath of Wind fans on me, wou'd a flan¬
ning shirt next my skin be of advantage. --
A most moderate costiveness attends me, I
use every method in my power to prevent it such
a Cold Bathing, Walking early in the morning
Drinking Beer, Whey, Butter milk, and different
kinds of fruit such as Apples Stew'd prunes, &c
all with very little effect. The bad effects I find
by Costiveness is in a little time a perfect want
of appetite a most grievous wind and Rum¬
bling in my Belly and Bowels and if not relie¬
ved by a Gentle purge terminates in a Cholic
some chance times am troubled with a headach
in the General am much affected with Cold and
my whole body in particular my hands and
feet are as cold as a dead man any Color often
Changes from a Reddy to a dismal pale yellow
am often times troubled with a >heartburn but
not of late so affected as formerly for then I
almost never wanted it. Sometimes I am
much troubled with the Water Brash And

Water in the General is of an exceeding high
Color not much unlike Brandy at other
times excessively clean But when clean
or muddy mostly in very small quantities
am sometimes very much pained in the
