Mr Buchanan about 15 years ago was Seized with
a Violent Inflammation in his Eye, Owing he thinks to
having Caught Cold while under a Mercurial Course. He
Recovered on Using the proper remedies, But 2 years after¬
ward he was Attacked a Second time with said
Complaint, He insists that the frequent & Copious
Bleeding advised on these Occasions has weakened Con¬
siderably his Constitution --- About the year 1765 he
went to America where he had the Ague at Different
times & for a long Continuance, And soon afterward
he was attacked with a Rhumatism in Different parts
of his Body which yielded to the proper remedies,
He came home the year following and had frequent
Complaints of the same Complaint But in a Less
Degree then in America. He was on this Occasion Bled,
took Antimonial Tincture, Guaiac. Dovers Powders & had a
Pea put in his leg, He was obliged to Again go to
America in 1773 where he was long harassed by severe
Intermittents which gave no Doubt a Violent shock to his
Constitution, But he kept pretty free of Rhumatic pains
while there --- When Comming home which was the year
following he brought with him an Aguish Tendency &
the Rhumatism began again to be troublesome particularly
in his Leg & in his head over his Eyes -- He took small
doses of Mercury & Antimonial Wine with Laudanum
Daily. His pulse was never about 80 most commonly it run
from 66 to 76. He was advised to go to Bath Where he used
the Waters Internally & Externally. He thought himself as

usual while there. But found himself better on comming
home & Continued pretty well till April 1776 about 10 Months
At this time he was Seized with a pain in his head
which terminated in a Violent pain in the right Eye.
of the Temple of that Side or of the neighbouring parts
He could not bear the least light was Confined
near 5 Weeks & his pulse Generally between 70 & 80 -- Their
was no inflammation to be seen in the Tunica Conjunc¬
tiva of the Eye nor any other part - He was Bled at the
arm, his Blood was not very sizy, He was bled once or
twice topically with Leeches, was blistered which
Gave him the greatest Relief, this was Accordingly
Repeated two or three times -- Recovering from this
he enjoyed a tolerable Good Health thro the Summer
tho during that time he had slight Attacks of
pain in his Loins Chiefly & Knees. tho they were not always
Confined to these parts -- In November last he was Seized with
an Affection of his Right side which was judged to
proceed from the same Cause as all his former pains
but put on more of the Spasmodic Appearance, It
began in that part of the Back towards the Region of
the Kidneys, then it moved upwards on the Side where
it remained first. Tho it suddenly as from a Centre
darted frequently with Excessive pains towards the Stomach
He was confined to his Bed, every motion Raisd the pain
to an untolerable degree, pulse calm as frequently formerly
generally between 70 & 80 & never very full, I may here remark
that never any of his Relations as fas as I could understand
had been plagued with Gout, neither had he ever any regular fit
of it, at this time he had a pain in his Knee also, he was not
now bled, the side was blistered & he was kept open with
Issue Ointment for Some time, He took less doses of

Guiac. Antimon Wine & Laudanum & at last recovered pretty
well, However the flying pains which was Called Rhumatic
Continued, & it was thought proper to again put a Pea
in his Leg. As it was imagined to have Succeeded
well before, it did not Run well & after 4 months was
taken out ---

Representation Ann. 1777 ---- Above is a pretty Ample
state of my Health for a Series of years, at present it is
Nearly the same as it has been at Different times Since
the Commencement of my Disorders called Rhumatic -- My pains
are principally in the fleshy parts of the Sides, Sometimes over
the Breast which feels now & then as Compressed & now &
then a little painful to the outward toutch, at other
times the pain is along the neck, Cross & down the lower
part of the Back & Loins, In the Joints of the knees &
fingers, and at some times round the navel, where it
has at times appeared as a spasm & which tho always of
short Duration was always verry violent while it lasted
In short the pains are always wandering about from
place to place & seldom keeping entirely away for many
hours together, But when the return comes it is in a
moment & is Generally first felt about the Loins after
Sitting or in the Hips --- I also frequently complain of
Lassitude, Depression of Spirits, a little degree of pain
at times in the Stomack, Tremor & now & then a
tendency to starting especially in Bed home & frequently
an Involuntary motion in the fingers, and all along
accompanied with a Weak Stomack, Easily disordered
particularly by Eating Raw Vegetables & greasy meats or
having Exceeded the bounds of strict moderation in other Eating
Drinking, or Going to bed later then usual. And on the
[Page 4]
whole I may observe to you that their is a Decay of
Strength & Flesh, yet while the Rhumation is moderate
as at present, I can walk about, & ride for hours
together & Amuse my self with such Excercise as are
not too fatiguing -- But in Reasoning from what is
past, from my observations in a Course of years.
My present State is only an Interval or Respite
of a few Months from something more severe - This
indeed seems to be a Degree of Health I often attain
& Cannot Exceed, For as Sure as I Get to a Certain
summit in Strength & Health, As sure I am that a
Fresh Attack is not far Distant --- I have tried
what a Low Diet & Abstinence from Flesh meats
& spiritous Liquors for some weeks would produce
But I can safely say I never reached any advantage
therefrom, On the Contrare I have Observed that a
Diet principally of Animal food, with a few glasses
of Wine particularly red port or Claret to be most
agreable to my Stomack & in my Opinion is of General
service, I have also observed that sometimes Drinking
freely has eased the Rhumatic feel, tho my Stomack
suffered by the Excess -- Tea & Coffee disorders my
Stomack if drank to the Extent of four or five
small Cupps & always Causes Tremor & Anziety,
have also Generally remarked bad Effects from
Purging medicines & am verry much of Opinion That the
taking of Nitre inwardly has brought an Rhumatism
