Belfast 23d. July 1775 ––
Sir

Since I did myself the pleasure of writing to
you last I had the pleasure to receive your favour of the 12th. Instant,
& am much obliged to you for your particular answer to my several queries.

According to your desire I take the liberty of advising you more parti¬
cularly the state of the eruption I am troubled with, after I received your
letter I shewed them to Doctor Kenley, & enquired of him if he thought
them of such a nature as to prevent me from bathing, he said he thought
not but nevertheless wou'd advise me to write to you before I wou'd begin
the use of the baths. –– It is now about four months since it first appear¬
ed but is now rather worse than it has been since the beginning. It is
principally upon my hands, & comes out in small yellow pimples, which
with scratching (which it is next to an impossibility to avoid) &c come
to sores
& discharge a good deal of humour. I have a good many upon
thighs & leggs, but the itching is most intolerable & I scratch a great
deal in my sleep, which makes it much worse, but it is not of a
kind that comes out & goes in, in a short time as they stay untill they
die away. I have not used any thing for it, except bathing the sores
with a little milk & water which eases me a little. –– Since I
wrote you last, I had an attack of my disorder, say about a fort¬
night since, about Eleven oClock at night, it was but slight, immediate¬
ly after it I was put to bed & continued sickish all night & vomited
two or three times
, the next morning I had another slight fitt, but
since that time have been entirely free from every symptom of the

[Page 2]

disorder. This day finished the fourth course of the Pills, & according
to your orders will not begin another for a month. –– I adhere strict¬
ly to your directions regarding my diet as I do not eat any thing but vege¬
tables & bread, nor drink any thing but milk or water, as I wou'd do
any thing to get well, both on account of being able to go to Barbadoes
to attend my business, & the pleasure I wou'd have in getting rid of so
disagreeable a disorder, but I wou'd fain flatter myself with the
hopes of having the cure soon accomplished, more especially so as it
was not brought on by any kind of intemperance, & a thing which I
never had the least symptom of till about a Couple of months before
I left Barbadoes. During the five years I was in that Island I did
not lye a single day with any disorder & I really look upon it to be
as healthy a country as this provided a man lives a temperate life, as
I never knew it to be very sickly, & know of very few Europeans dying
during my stay there, a Bilious complaint is the most frequent dis¬
order among them, but I never had the least touch of that, indeed
I cannot say so much for any of the other West India Islands
as they are almost one & all very unhealthy. –– Till within this
month I made some use of tobacco both in chewing & smoking &
since I have quit the use of it find I have not been troubled
with the disagreeable symptoms that I formerly was every day in
the Intervals between the attacks, whither it is owing to my quitting
the use of Tobacco or not I cannot say. –– You'll pleaseng to accept
my sincere thanks for your politeness in desireing me not to renew
a fee this time. I hope I will be able soon to shew you that

[Page 3]

I entertain a proper sense of your generosity. –– As I will begin to
bathe immediately upon hearing from ↑you↑ (provided you approve of it) & as
I will begin the course of Pills shortly after, I shou'd be glad to know
if that need prevent me from going on with the bathing the same
as if I was not taking the Pills –– I have not any thing more
to add, but to y beg you'll accept my best wishes for your health
& happiness I am very sincerely Sir

your obliged Humble Servant
Jno. Seed

P.S. This heat is not catching as I have lain often with young
men of my acquaintance & they did not find any bad effect
from it ––––
