The Consultation Letters of Dr William Cullen (1710-1790) at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh

[ID:1155] From: Mr Andrew Liddell (Liddle) / To: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / Regarding: Alexander Bremner (Patient) / 12 July 1775 / (Incoming)

Letter of referral from Andrew Liddell at Thurso concerning Alexander Bremner, a farmer with complications after the surgical removal of a tumour on his lip and who 'is going to Edinburgh on account of his health' and so will deliver the letter in person. It is unclear what the marks by the address indicate but they are presumably not directly associated with commercial posting as the letter was hand-delivered. Cullen's office annotation 'John Bremner Weaver in the Shoemarkers Close' presumably refers to a kinsman of the patient (with whom Alexander is lodging while in Edinburgh?).

Dear Sir,

The Bearer of this Letter Alexander Bremner
a Farmer here, is going to Edinburgh on account of
his health. I have advised him to wait upon you,
& hope you will be so good as give him such directions
as you think proper for his disorder.

Last Spring he applied to me about a tumour in his Lip,
which appearing Cancerous I cut out. The part healed up
easily, & seemed quite well for a month after, when a
hardness began in the corner of his mouth, ever since
gradually extending itself, & attended with itching & pain
I thm (en) gave him the Cicuta, which he has continued till
now, without any sensible advantage. It was in¬
creased ↑in↑ the dose to a Drachm every day. A Degree of
Vertigo was the rule by which the increase of the dose
was regulated; but for some time past the medicine
has not had any sensible effect.

He will be regulated entirely by your direction (advice), either
to stay at Edinburgh for some time or to return home
with your Directions.

I am with respectful
Compliments. Dear Sir
your most obedient humble Servant.
