Directions for [James] Abernethie Esqr., a young man with consumption, for his journey from Edinburgh to Southampton. He evidently carried this letter with him for Dr John Stewart (see Doc [ID:2571] ); the advice for the journey may be aimed at his older sister, who seems to have been looking after him. Cullen writes: 'If I had been advised more early, I should have proposed his going to Madeira or some place in the South of Europe but it is too late now to go so far off and I hope it will be enough for him to go to the South of England'. He advises how he should break his journey, the kind of carriage, and diet he should follow.11 February 1785

Reply, 'Dr John Stewart C[oncerning] a Lady'. Her case is 'very desperate': the physician who told her that her husband had not infected her with the pox was wrong. Cullen is convinced 'she now labours under a Venereal Phthisis'. He advises the use of mercury, even though it may 'hurry on' the Phthisis Pulmonalis fatally. He also tells Dr Stewart that 'this day a Gentleman by my advice given some time ago sets out for Southampton to be under your care', carrying a letter and directions – a reference to James Abernethie of Mayen. 15 February 1785

Letter from John Stewart, thanking Cullen for his response on his unnamed female patient. He informs him of Mr Abernethie's safe arrival, bearing Cullen's letter about him [ID 4981]. Miss Abernethie has been advised by friends in London to go with her brother to Madeira. The place of posting on the cover seems to be handwritten on as London, indicating that W Molleson provided a frank (free postage).6 March 1785
