| Considered to be one of the major figures of Scottish Enlightenment publishing, having published works by James Beattie, Hugh Blair, James Beattie, Robert Burns, William Cullen, and Sir John Sinclair’s “Statistical Account of Scotlandâ€, amongst others (see Richard Sher, “The Enlightenment and the Bookâ€, Chicago UP, 2006). He was the co-founder of the Society of Booksellers of Edinburgh and Leith, and while a member of the Edinburgh town council he helped create the Chamber of Commerce and Manufactures of Edinburgh in 1786. In 1811 he became the Lord Provost of Edinburgh. Creech never married and had no children. He is buried at Greyfriars Kirkyard, Edinburgh. |
