For Mrs Hutchinson

A weakness of the stomach seems to be Mrs Hutchinsons
Complaint and such a complaint at her time of life is not easi¬
ly cured after it has been allowed to last so long, but by
some pains it may be mended and the trouble arid arising
from it avoided: I was very proper to try to relieve the disorder
by vomiting & it may be at times necessary still but I would avoid
it much as possible as I am certain that frequent vomiting will do
harm
. The Tincture of Bark is very proper for strenthening the
stomach and it may be continued but should not be continued
for longer than a fortnight at one time but after an intermission
for the same for the same space she may retrun to it again.

When the bark is intermitted let her take twice a day
a Dose of the stomachic Powder ordered below. The best times
are a little before Dinner & supper. The Powder may be tak¬
en either with a little water or made with som syrup into a
bolus and swallowed in a wafer. Nothing is more necessary
in this case than keeping the belly exactly regular
and for that purpose I [have?] prescribed below a Tincture
of which she is to take a table spoonfull or two at bedtime
The Dose is to be encreased or Diminished so as to give only
one motion but every day and as this happens or not the Dose
is to be respected or omitted - Tho it has not yet had so much effect
as may be wished there is nothing morely likely to do her service
than to ride on horseback only it must be to some length and
nothing under three hours at a time can be of much use. It
should be always before Dinner and she should be well de¬
fended against cold.

[Page 2]

In Diet she must avoid roots greens or other vegetables she
should be sparing of broth and take cheifly of solid food
but the lighter kinds are the fitter, she should avoid all
wines and malt liquor and Her ordinary Drink may be
water with a little spirits in it. Tea is bad. -------
