Sweden March 7 1772


A young Gentleman about Twenty four years of age at this date, [a native?]
of Great Britain but at present resident in this Country, and whose [business?]
Carried him to Scotland in April Anno 1770 was siez d on horseback [when?]
attended by a Single Servant with a Convulsion fitt, (which is vulgarly calld
the falling Sickness) this fitt is the first he ever had in his life & occasioned
him to fall from his Horse ---------------- The next was May 1. Anno 1 1771
then on horseback in Sweden, the Continuance of this last was about Ten
Minutes : as to the Continuance of the first, cannot say, as the Servant
then present is now in Edinburgh. ----- On the 17 January last {illeg}
said Gentleman was attackt with another fitt of the same kind : {illeg}
been in his writing room from 10 to 12 in the Morning of that [day?]{illeg}
ly aperson who was with him all that times, observed, that he [was?]{illeg}
too Keen on business at that Season of the year; it being then {illeg}
and the writing room not warm ----- About 5 Minutes after
twelve, he calld out to the person that was in the room with him
for Godsake to hold him for he was a gone Man: This was
instantly complied with by the person present : Cold water was
Rubbd on his Temples and thrown in his face, and everything else that
aperson who knew nothing of the dissorder was usd : ----- He
[Start of margin text]5. Minutes[End of margin text] might be about 5 Minutes in a State of Convulsion : A Surgeon
being got as soon as it ↑was↑ possible; he orderd bleeding which was
instantly done, and then the Sick person went to bed; but before he got
there, he vomited a parcell Nasty Stuff. The Surgeon then orderd him
some Physick which wraught all that afternoon and part of the night,
and orderd his Patient to live on Spare diet. For the Space of 2{illeg}
after this last fitt took him, his memory was quite gone. {illeg}
Three days after he appeard as well as ever, (Except some [aridness?]
about his eyes). In this state he continued, till the 17 February last
about 3 Minutes after one O Clock when just going to Dinner
he was siezd in the same manner as before, but the fitt continued
full 15 Minutes and was rather more severe. ----- The Surgeon
Bled him as formerly, and orderd him Physick which had the
desird Effect : The day after was orded a Vomit which brought
a deal of Stuff off his Stomach : Since that time nothing very
Material has happn'd, only he has been heard while in bed and
asleep at the Dead hour of the Night to issue some very heavy
melancholy Groans, & even to Sing --- this he knew nothing of next
morning

[His?] diet in Scotland was such as persons travelling usually gets,
{illeg}as Beef, Mutton & ↑ceee↑, and his diet when here much the same with the
Addition of Oatmeal Pottage and Claret sometimes instead of Tea for
Breakfast in the Morning, & Variety of Fresh fish for Dinner & Supper


His time of going to bed (take it in generall is
about 10 at Night) and rising between 8 & 9 in Mornings of Cold weather
and earlier when the Season for permitts ------ He has for some
Years past us'd himself to drink in bed before breakfast at least,
One English Gill of French brandy mixt with water to Quench
{illeg}, and every day between 11 & 12 oClock before dinner [repeated?]
{illeg}, and in the afternoon continued on the same way. At meat
{illeg}beer is his favourite drink with a glass of Claret or
{illeg}ch,' but if a Bottle Porter can be had, the two last articles
are rejected ------ He is vastly fond of Roasted Potatoes
and Cold Mutton hams; of those he never wearies, & eats more
of these & fresh fish than any other Victuals --- His Connections
thinks it may proceed from anxiety of mind, which he denies


His parents are well known have to be free
from such ailments; no healthyer persons Exists. This being the
Gentleman case as well as a person {illeg} not knowing in
Physick is humbly submitted to Two Physicians of Charrades
and Mr. James Rae surgeon in Edinburgh, whose advice
oppinion &c & c &c. are desird in course of post


NB. ---- It must be observd from the conversation Received from
the Gentleman who was in Company when the fitt took him and
I reckon that on 1. May 1771. that during that fitt, all his limbs
& Joints were remakably limber. --- Those of 17. Janry
& 17 June Febry last coming so sudden & unexpected the person
present being frighted cannot Recollect the situation of these
members at that Critical time ---------
