Saturday se'night when I had
the pleasure of meeting you on my way
to Musselburgh. I intended to have
paid my respects to Dr Cullen and you
but found the gout, which had teased
me for 3 days, so much increased
that I was not able to stir and finding
it little better next morning I set off
for fear of being laid up at Edinburgh.
I beg you will make my apology
to your father and tell him that I
am very much obliged to him for his
introductory letter to Dr Stevenson
who has behaved very much like a
gentleman to me -- My business here
is much better than I could expect not¬
withstanding the most illiberal and
[Page 2]
unjust opposition by some of the Surgeons
here ----
Two days ago I had a letter from
Mr. Brown, whose case was sent you
lately by Mr. Gibson, - I saw him a
short time after his arrival here and
am sorry to inform you that there
are too many symptoms of Phthisis
to make the least ambiguity in his
case and what must militate much
against him - I'm afraid he labours
under the disadvantage of an here¬
ditary taint - as his mother died of the
same complaint --
I have urged his father to send
him to warm climate in winter as
I look upon his recovery here to be
[Page 3]
very doubtfull -- I shall be happy to
have your opinion of this proposal -
notwithstanding Mr. Gibson mentions
his being better - his pulse still con¬
tinues above 100 and his Cough is still
troublesome notwithstanding the constant
use of Gum Arabic in quantities
and other demulcents with Opia[tes]
occasionally - besides the wasting
of his flesh & prostration of strength
is considerable -- he found the symp¬
toms a good deal relieved - by a ten day
course lately --- Either Mr. Gibson
or I will write you in a few days --
I am with regard, Dear Sir
Your most Obedient servant
