[ID:5937] From: Mr Kirsop (Kirsopp, of Hexham, Northumberland) / To: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / Regarding: Mr Kirsop (Kirsopp, of Hexham, Northumberland) (Patient) / July 1776 / (Incoming)

Letter from Mr William Kirsopp of Hexham concerning his own case, 'a continual whising or Noise in the Head like a pann simmering before it Boiles'. assumed to be an authorial original because of the first-person voice and the distinctive handwriting, but there's no wrapper and from the folds (vertical only ) it does not appear to have been folded so as to be sealed and sent (so likely to have been hand-delivered).

My Complaint is a continual Whising or Noise in the Head like
a pann Simmering before it Boiles, without any Pain.

It begunn the beginning of ffebruary 1775. And has Continued ever
Since, tho' it is not Always in One and the same place.
It's Sometimes in the Temples, Other times in the left Ear----
Other times in the left Side of the Head above the Ear, And at
other times At the Top of the back part of the Head, Always ----
Shifting about the left Side of the Head -

How I got it, cannot say, but thought At the time, it was --
by Cold, in Changeing my Wigg's

Three or ffour times the Summer before I had in the-
morning On my first rising Washed and Bathed my --
ffeet, in a pale of Cold Water, As they Aked, as if beaten --
on a hard Turnpike with a long Walk, but Whether that----
cou'd be the Occasion of this Complaint.

On it's first comeing on I got my Ears Syringed, As it was
Supposed to be Wax, but that had not any Effect-

I then took Medicines Prescribed by Dr. ffenwick,----
mostly the Bark, and Guaicum Drops, and Rode out for --
Exercise, for about 6 month's, Almost every day --

In the July following I bathed at Sea, ffor three Week's -
Once every day-

After that took the Bark again for severall Week's -
but have not taken any thing for these Eight Month's-
by past, But a good deal of Exercise on Horseback ---

In December last I had two Issues Put between my
Shoulder's, by Costicks, Which for 4 or 5 Month's held
7 peas apeice, And since that, and now have 13 peas--
apeice.

[Page 2]

They have all along and do now Discharge a good deal ---

My Complaint is much the same, Now, As it has --
been, for it never Ceases, Unless at some time by ---
Chance, that I Drink 4 or 5 Glasses of Wine, more than
Ordinary, it will be quite Easy that Evening, but next
morning, it will grow Worse again, and Continue so for --
half a day, When it will get into it's former State.

When I awake in the Morning, the trouble is alway's
in the back part of my head. ↑from the Top downward↑ and on Stirring my head,
it will Crack in the back part, like Wine breaking, on ---
being too much [Streached?]. 1

On my Bathing last Summer the 3d or 4 time ----
Something Struck me. On the back part of my Head
when I was Under Water, As if the whole Complaint
was thrown there by the Shock of the Water.
I find at Different times the most trouble there----
and by times like a pain proceeding from it down ---
my Neck, but it does not Continue long.

I have lived in a Uniform Way for these severall
Years, Never Drink any thing before Dinner ---
At Dinner a little Small Beer and Ale, And ----
Generally a pint of Red port Wine, Some times --
more, but not to any Excess, And sometimes less,
but lived pretty much in one Uniform Way, ----
Alway's takeing a Cheerfull Glass, and Some times -
Smoked a pipe or two in the evening, And Washed--

or never Eat any Supper.
