I have with great attention considered
The case that Lord Lonsdale ↑and you↑ does me the
honour of transmitting to me, and ↑below↑ I give
you my opinion and best advice which I
suppose as to be put into the hands of
my good and particular friend Dr. D. Campbell
Wishing heartely your Daughters better

For Miss Maria Saul
There can be no doubt as I judge of the
nature of this young womans complaint
She appears to me have (↑be↑) pretty far gone
in {illeg} pulmonary consumption, and the
[fatal event?] of it is very much to be obviated

{illeg} to be {illeg}
hardly any {illeg} [is as?] {illeg} as {illeg}
{illeg} it. In the
present case, I have {illeg} to what
Dr. Campbell has done {illeg} which {illeg}
with good judgement. The diet seems to be
perfectly well ordered, and I would not advise
any animal food, but as far as Calves foot
or Hartshorn jelly may go, and I believe
that three or four glasses of them (↑a glass of them↑) may
be taken three or four times a day.
Some gentle exercise is very properly recom¬
mended, and I am sorry to find that Miss
Saul does not bear it so well, {illeg}
wish, that though she can't {illeg} I
think it will be proper for her to go in
a carriage into the fresh air every day and
for the length of time or {illeg}
easily bear.

I am clear for her continuing the Cicuta
pills leaving it to Dr. Campbells discretion
to judge how far the strength of them may
be [increased?].
I am persuaded that her cough and tenden¬
cy to Diarrhœa will require the Tinctura
Thebaica at bed time, but ↑I shall be glad↑ to find it can be
used with reserve, and so far that it may
not bring on or increase night sweats
The only medicine I would add is
the following
Take three drachms of Extract of liquorice and one drachm of Balsam of Tolu. After having divided the Extract into little pieces, pour over it enough boiling water in order to let it soften and reduced into a pulp, to which you add the Balsam previously reduced into a fine powder with a little sugar, and with a sufficient quantity of gum of tragant let it be a mass to be divided into pills of five grains each. Label: Pectoral Pills; two to be taken twice every day.
