The Consultation Letters of Dr William Cullen (1710-1790) at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
[ID:556] From: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / To: Mr Wallis / Regarding: Mrs Wallis (Patient) / 24 May 1782? / (Outgoing)
Reply to Mr Wallis concerning Mrs Wallis', who is suffering from eruptions in addition to her other ailments. Cullen recommends she 'bear with these eruptions' until her constitution is somewhat strengthened, as they may be useful for it. Wallis and his wife are presumably in Ireland but there is no firm evidence for this in the letters associated with the case.

Mr Wallis Concerning Mrs Wallis
I have attentively considered what you
have been pleased to communicate from Mrs Wallis' -
letter and have also looked over again the advice I formerly
gave. To that former advice I don't find any thing to be
added and I hope that a strict attention to regimen
these proposed will soon make a change in her constitution
and therefore in her complaints. I have not indeed directed
any remedy particularly against the eruptions because I
believe they may be rather usefull to her constitution and
the remedies that might be thought of for the eruptions might
be hurtfull to her other ailments. I would therefore have
Mrs Wallis bear with these eruptions till her constitution
is somewhat strengthened & when this happens I expect
the eruptions will be less troublesome. I have great
expectations from cold bathing but I think Mrs Wallis
[Page 2]
has judged rightly in letting it alone during the late
very severe weather. But I hope this shall soon be at an
end and then she may either go to Mallow or to the sea
or if neither of these are quite convenient she may employ
a good spring water at home taking care only that she
always employs the water immediately as it comes from the
spring, that being the means of having it always of the same
temperature.
Wishing you heartily her relief I am
Dear Sir your most obedient servant
