Burnet of Counterswells
I had the honour of yours of the
25th current when I supposed that a letter from me would
at the same time be with Dr Bannerman at Aberdeen
and as I expected an immediate answer from him telling
me how you relished the proposal I had made of your
going to sea. But as I have now waited eight days with¬
out hearing farther from either Dr Bannerman or your
self I can no longer delay answering your letter.
I am still of the same opinion I expressed in my letter
to Dr Bannerman that I would prefer a sea voyage to every
other remedy for you and I have inquired after a neutral ship
of which there are always some here & of which you might
have a choice if you could come here but tho some of them
are bound to the northward I don't find that any of them
can be engaged to call at Aberdeen. If you either can¬
not or will not engage in a voyage I must say that the
next best is a voya journey by land and have no doubt in
[Page 2]
saying that a journey should be directed to Bristol
and that you should either remain there for some time or
set a travelling again according as the Bristol waters
should agree with you. With respect to passing the
winter I think no part of Brittain is sufficiently safe
but the safest is certainly the Isle of Wight. With respect
to France no part is tolerably safe but the southermost -
parts of it and the nearer to the coast of the Mediterranean
the better. Wishing heartily that in every respect you
may make a successfull choice I am with great regard
Sir
your most obedient humble servant
