Miss Gordon
Madam

I Send you inclosed a Prescription for the
Solution that you are at present taking and which
I would have you continue to take till you go to
Gilsland and even after you go there if the
water does not open your belly as it seldom
does, or on the contrary if it binds your belly as it seldom
as it sometimes does you should frequently
take a dose of your Solution, but in place
of common water you may take it of (↑in↑) that
of Gilsland

With respect to your drinking the
Gilsland water
it is to be taken only in the
morning and always about two hours before
breakfast. She must drink it always
in divided draughts leaving a quarter of
[an hour?] between each. At first She is
{illeg} by taking a draught of a quarter of a

pint only and half an hour after take another
of the same quantity and no more for that day.
But on the second day She may take three and
on the third four such draughts and at this
quantity She should continue for six or Eight
days more. In that time She will perceive
clearly how the water agrees with her. If it
Sits light on her Stomach and increases her
Appetite for breakfast and passes readily by
Urine these are signs of its agreeing pretty well
and therefore She may go on to drink it a
little more freely and continuing the same
number of draughts She may increase the
bulk of each till She can take about a
quart of English every morning but beyond
this quantity I would not have her to go for I
think the People who frequent Gilsland
commonly the water in too large quantity

I have thus said how you are to manage

when the water agrees with you but if you
shall find that it lies heavy upon your
Stomach
and that your Stomach does not
easily bear the quantities I proposed or that
it does not mend your Appetite and rather
takes it away and that the water you take
does not readily pass by urine you may
from these circumstances conclude that it
does not agree with you and that you must
let it alone but I do not allow of this
conclusion till you have tried it for
Eight days in the gradual manner
I have proposed above.

I have only to add that you will be the
better for this water the more you take
Exercise on horseback or in a Carriage at the
same time and that you should if possible go
abroad in one way or other every day and according
to the weather in the forenoon or in the Evening
I should have said above that if you can walk about
during the intervals of drinking the water you will
be the better for it.

I am respectfully Madam
[your most obedient servant?]
