For Miss Shaw

I am very clearly of opinion that if She does
not get the Chincough she will be much the better
for spending some part of the Summer in the
Highlands as in that Country the Air is purer
and wholesomer than in Town and tho' the
air was not better than in Town, there is
one great advantage to be obtained by Persons
being much more commonly in the open Air
than they are in Town.

I particularly recommend to Miss
Shaw to obtain this advantage by being as much
in the open air as the weather will fairly
allow of. At the same time She should be
very constantly in gentle exercise. Moderate
Walking, that is, neither too fast, not too
long at one time, nor much up hill. Walking

[Page 2]

managed this way may be of Service but it
will bef much more, for Miss Shaw to get
frequently on Horseback and to ride a good deal
and I hope She has made provision for that
purpose.

Whither She walks or Rides she
must always have a view of guarding against
Cold and therefore never to go upon wet ground
never to get wet nor to Sit down in damp
Cloaths and never to be abroad in the Evening
especially in damp weather, generally to be
well Cloathed and never to put off Cloaths
on account of warm weather.

By observing all these circumstances
of management Miss Shaw will be the
better for being in the Highlands but She
may also derive some benefit from drinking

[Page 3]

Goat whey there. She should not be in a haste
to begin this till the Grass and Herbs are
well grown and which cannot be till
{illeg} of next month.

When She does begin it let it be by degrees
taking for the first morning half a mutckin only
and encreasing it every day by never more than
a gill at once She may at length come to take
a Chopin but it will never be necessary to
take more and if She does not digest it easily
or if it does not pass readily either by Stool
or Urine She should not take even so much.

She should take it always in divided drafts
about half a mutckin at once and at the interĀ¬
val of half an hour or thereby between each.
She may take the first draft as She lies a bed
and in bad mornings, perhaps a Second but

[Page 4]

for ordinary She should get out of bed before She
takes the second draft of whey and if the morning
is fair She should walk about a little between
the other drafts. It should be at least after
the whey is finished at least half an hour and
rather an hour before She takes breakfast.

I find it of very little benefit for Persons
to drink whey in the Evening but if Miss
Shaw finds the Goat whey digest with her
very well She may if she pleases take a
draft of whey with a bit of toasted bread for
her Supper. If the whey passes by stool or if
it even keeps her belly regular She will need no
Physic but if the whey does not pass well She
may once a week or oftner if needful take half
an Ounce of Rochelle salts
in the morning with
her ordinary whey. And for this purpose she should
carry several doses of this kind along with her from
home. No particular diet is necessary with the Goat
whey, but she should avoid malt liquor.
