Dr Gilchrist Concerning Mr. Mc.dowal
I received your Parsel relating to Mr. Mc.dowal
and have since had a Conversation with himself. By this
post I send him as full an opinion and advice as
my time [since?] would my ways allow of. I dare say
he will communicate it to you and therefore I
need not repeat any part of it here and Say only
that I hope you will approve of the whole {illeg}
me very much by telling me wherein you do not.
I have given him a favourable opinion
of his Case but it is a Sincere one for I really found
him in a much better condition than I expected.
I cannot indeed Say to you that his Case is not
precarious or that it can be relieved in a short
time but I hope that in due time it may.
You know very well that it is a Case in
which there is not much room for medicine
but it may be very proper to Employ some
[Page 2]
I [see?] that I have formerly prescribed a little {illeg}
but I {illeg} not now so good an opinion {illeg}
as to [inculcate?] the repetition of it and the only other
medicine I have formerly prescribed was a [laxative?]
which you can easily supply when there is any
occasion for it. The only medicine I would think
of at present is in case of any marks of {illeg}
or of threatning Hæmoplysis is is the Vitriolic
Acid to be employed at your discretion. When [the]
Season advances to afford fresh leaves of the [I?]
Tussilago I have a good opinion of the expressed
juice of these leaves and I avoid the flowers
as acrid substances.
I cannot easily join you in proposing Mer¬
cury. I have now seen it frequently employed and
have never found any benefit from it and
sometimes much harm. If in any form it
was to be employed I should certainly adopt
[Page 3]
{illeg} but it is a prepara¬
tion am very little acquainted with.
I should have said above that it is certainly of
consequence to Mr. Macdowal to keep a regular belly
and it may be proper to employ a more cooling
purgative than that I prescribed before. I have
not time to add a word more but that I am
most sincerely
