S. J.
I am favoured with both your letters under Mr.
S. {illeg} and think the only troublesome symptoms
at present is the swelled testicle. The cause of this
which is almost always owing to a stoppage of the
running and this again is not owing to either leeches
Oil or Powder but to the erection and evacuation
that followed it. I expect that the injection of Oil
will bring back the running again and if it does
the swelling of the testicle will soon give way.
In the mean time you were a little impatient in
applying the Leeches when there was little occasion
for them and they should have been, and should be
reserved for the time of considerable inflammation.
At present I can assure you that Mercurial
Ointment can do no Service and might do harm
you must trust to rest, fomentation, injection of
the Oil, and perhaps to Leeches. You must also
[Page 2]
continue the Powders and dont neglect the laxative Oil
when necessary and I hope the return of the running
will soon give you relief.
Your female friend needs no Mercury yet
but must continue the injection and for that purpose
I have sent another Phial of it. Expecting frequent
reports I am
