For Capt. Balnevis
The Captains Ailments are at present very
moderate but they are of such a nature as often come
on mildly and afterwards arise to a dangerous degree.
This especially happens when persons are exposed
to the cold of Winter in this Climate and therefore
we judge it to be extremely proper for Capt. Balnevis
to avoid this accident and to repair immediately
to a Southern Climate where Winter is little felt.
In doing this he might have his own choice
of place but if he has nothing to determine
his choice we are of opinion that Lisbon will
be of the most convenient access and as well
suited to his purpose as any other that might
[Page 2]
be thought of.
We have but little Advice further to offer.
Wherever he is his principal care should be to avoid Cold
for even at Lisbon a person may take cold by change
of dress, by being exposed to cold wind and especially
by being exposed to moisture and therefore by being
in the night or even the Evening Air.
His diet should continue to be very light
and cool. He ought to take very little Animal
food or if his Cough increases or his breast becomes
bound he should take none at all. His diet
should be almost entirely of milk, grain and
fruit with a little of such Garden things as
the Season affords.
His drink should be water or watery
liquors only, such as Gruel, Orgeat, or Barley
[Page 3]
water. He may sometimes take a little wine in his
water but ought to be sparing in this respect
and a plain wine he should hardly ever taste at all.
The only medicine that we can think ne¬
cessary is some laxative to be employed when Cos¬
tiveness may require it for Costiveness allowed to
proceed to any degree may be very hurtful to
his breast
