For Mrs Young Husband

After considering very attentively the past
history and present state of her complaints I am of
opinion that all of them depend upon a Gouty
disposition which her constitution is not strong
enough to throw out in its proper form. This is
a state of matters not easily mended but time
and pains may do a great deal to relieve it and
for this purpose I offer the following directions

1 Every day that is tolerably mild and fair
let her go on horseback behind a man for two or
three hours in the forenoon.

2. In taking this Exercise and at all other
times She must take a great deal of care to
avoid cold. For this purpose She should have
flannel or woolen every where next her Skin

[Page 2]

She should wear constantly two pairs of Stockings
and if her feet are liable to become cold and
especially when She rides out She should have
the addition of foot Socks on her feet and riding
hose upon her legs. If at any time when She
is within doors her feet should become cold
let them be immediately brought into heat
by chaffing them before the fire.

3 While her Appetite is so bad I cannot
be positive in ordering her diet and at present
I would generally allow her to take what
She has any inclination for but it is my
opinion that Tea and Broth with Roots and
Greens are bad for her and that She should
endeavour to take something nourishing
and solid as often as her Stomach can be

[Page 3]

brought to bear it.

4 In the way of medicine as soon as She
is Settled at home let her take every forenoon
one of the Stomachic powders prescribed in the
inclosed paper. The best time is about Twelve
oClock Noon or when She is to go abroad to ride
She may take the powder about a quarter or
half an hour before She is to go out.

5 Every day about half an hour or an
hour before dinner let her take a dose of the
Stomachic drops as I have now corrected the
prescription. The same dose is to be taken
about an hour or more after She has taken
any food or at least as soon as She finds any
sickness coming on

6 When She has had much Sickness

[Page 4]

or reaching
in the Evening let her take at bed time
such a draft as I ordered for her last night and for
which the prescription is repeated in the inclosed
paper.

7 It is extremely necessary for her to avoid
Costiveness and it should be done either by her taking
a laxative or when the Costiveness has gone a little
far by taking a glyster.

8 I have only to add that if it should at any
time happen that the pains of her stomach should
be frequent and violent or that her Vomitings
should be so I have ordered in the inclosed paper
a glyster that will hardly fail to give her relief.
