Mr Bates
I have communicated yours to Dr Monro,
and he and I are both of opinion that Mr. Bates' ailment
now discovers itself more clearly and in a manner to give
us less alarm. He is plainly got a Jaundice and
probably a bilious stone in the Ductus communis.
We must not think his ailments have produced biliary
obstructions but the biliary obstruction has produced
all his former complaints. We are not positive that
he has no disposition to Gout but we can by no
means at present advise his going to the Bath and
hope his Ailments may be removed without his taking
so much trouble.
Let him for sometime lay aside the Guaiac solution
and take in place of it the Electuary and Infusion
prescribed on other page. If that Electuary does not
keep his belly open Let him now and then take a
dose of the Laxative I ordered before. He may be the
better also for taking once a week fifteen grains of

Ipecacuanha for a Vomit.
These are the only medicines we would advise at
present but we would earnestly recommend to him
the taking so much exercise on horseback as he possibly
can.
His Diet may continue to be the same as formerly
advised. I am glad to hear that Miss Alison is no worse
since I saw her. I hope and heartily wish she may
be better for the Course I put her upon. With respectful

For Ralph Bates Esqr.
Take a drachm each of very good powdered rhubarb and crushed powder of wormwood, an ounce of Spanish soap, and enough Simple Syrup to make an Electuary. Label Aperient Electuary the bigness of a nutmeg to be taken a wafer twice a day, washing it down with a small cupful of the following
Take a drachm each of crushed small cornflower and chamomile flowers, half an ounce of Jamaican pepper, a pound and a half of boiling water. Leave to soak for four hours and to the strained liquid add two ounces of nutmeg water, two drachms of tartar salt. Label Aperient Infusion, a small two-ounce cupful to be taken after every dose of the Electuary
