fair day.
Diet milk & farinacea, without animal food or wine
or spirituous liquors.
I have ordered two prescriptions below which will be em¬
ployed for some time & [me in?]formed of their effects.
She should have an Issue constantly open; I should chuse
it as a perpetual issue on the {illeg} part of her side and if
that is very troublesome, put a pea issue into the arm of the
same side.
Tho' riding &c will be of service she must avoid all motion
of a violent kind or much bodily exercise.
I should wish to know how for you had you with opiates
if you employed any for her Cough. The only shape I
would chuse to try them in is in the form of the Trochisci
Bechici cum Opio 1 ; allowing one of these to melt leisurely
in her mouth, but following it with one or two more.
Try this on the forenoon & let me know how they answer.
Take a drachm of Myrrh, three drachms of liquorice extract. Immerse the extract in enough water to let it soften, then add the myrrh crushed to powder and make a Mass to be divided into individual Pills of five grams each. Label Pectoral pills two every night at bed time.
Take an ounce of dried tussilago leaves. Cook in two to one pounds of water and at the end add a drachm of sweet fennel seed, two drachms of liquorice extract. Strain and label Pectoral Decoction two tablespoonfuls to be taken three or four times a day particularly with the pills at bed time.
Notes:
1: An approved type of lozenge 'with opium'. For ingredients see Pharmacopoeia Collegii Regii Medicorum Edinburgensis (Edinburgh: 1774), p. 170.
