Tho I am persuaded that the pains you have long com¬
plained of were originally Rheumatics it is very possible
that they may now be renewed and increased by wind in the
stomach and it is very necessary for you to take great
care in avoiding this new Complaint. For this Purpose I
offer the following hints

Whatever you may think of the strength of your stomach
I assure you that like every other Bodys it may the worse
of the wearing. The wind you complain of is a certain
proof of it and it is absolutely necessary for you to
treat your stomach with some Care. Nothing hurts so much
as over charging with either meat or drink and every
body who has a good appetite is liable to do so. Let
me advise you therefore never to make a full meal
of any kind of meat. The kind of meat makes very little
difference and it is the quantity that is of Consequence
It is however difficullt to check appetite and therefore
it must be cheated and ↑you↑ should continue to take such
things as may save a full meal of meat upon this
footing it is proper for you to take Soup Pudding or
vegetables. All these in their Quality are more flatulent
than meat but they save the stomach from being loaded
and make it less liable to be affected with wind.

[Page 2]

You should take care to avoid long fasting which both
breeds wind and leads to too full a meal. Avoid also taking
much Drink with your victuals as Both Dispose to flatulency
malt liquor of all kinds is bad for you and all small
bodied wines so cyder Rhemish Claret and champagne
or other ↑French↑ white wines are improper. Madeira sherry
and other Strong Spanish Wines or red Port are much
safer but should be taken with water. The safest of all
and least liable to Breed wind is spirits and water when
you dont take the Spirits in large Proportion. Tea and Coffee
are both bad for you and a weak Chocolate or Cocao tea
will make a better breakfast. There is nothing more ready
to accasion wind in the Stomach than Costiveness and
tho you have been very little liable to this yet the same
causes that Breeds the wind breeds flatulency costiveness
and therefore you may be liable to especially in travelling
On this account I have ordered Pills which I hope
will answer the Purpose as without trouble as they
require no alteration in the Diet or otherwise. So much
on flatulency at the same time cold and fatigue
and every irregularity will certainly increase them.
