Mr Cockayne Concerning Mrs Cokayne
Sir
I am still of opinion that the measure proposed
to you are the most proper, but I think there must be
something in the execution not quite exact. The effect of the
Aloetic Pill was rather too much for after three or four Stools
from one dose the Belly is ready to become costive & this
seems to have been the case by the evacuation ↑& relief↑ which the Glyster
afterwards gave. I would have you manage the Aloetic if possible
so as to prevent Costiveness without any purging, & your sure
measure will be as soon as soon as any pains come on to
give a Laxative Glyster. In the use of the Laudanum
I think your first dose was too small, & it would have
been better to have given at once twenty or twentyfive
Drops than to have divided it, but if such a dose as I
propose does not in two hours give considerable relief, I would
even then give fifteen drops more. It is very possible that
in such a Constitution as Mrs C.s the Laudanum may
give the headach & pain of the Eyes you mention, but it is
a temporary distress only & does not commonly prevent
the effect of the Laudanum upon the chief ailment, & so I
[Page 2]
Think it happened to Mrs C. as if I understand the case
rightly She was easier on the last occasion than usual.
As for the draining which continued & the Floor Fluor Albus which
followed they must be let alone until we have got the
Menses to come with more ease. I am &c.
