Mr A. Gair. Alnwick
Sir
I have been consulted by a paitient of your Mr G.
Hall & I think I can give you my opinion better than I
can do himself. -- I think the Disease a Hypochondriasis
consisting chiefly of spasmodic affections of the Stomach
& Bowels. Such complaints are sometimes founded on (↑in↑) Schirrosities
of the viscera hardly to be mended, but I could not conclude
Mr H.s case to be of that kind & hoped I might relieve him
by reading Chalybeates & the proper use of the Laxatives as
you would perceive by my former prescription Whether he
has followed my directions or not I cant judge as he does not
tell me what are the effects of them, but only tells me in
general that he has no relief. - You'l take care that
he uses the Laxative pills often enough to prevent any
Costiveness. At the same time let him use the prescription
in his letter & if he continues to have restless nights let
him take sometimes at bedtime an Anodyne draught with
Tinct Thebaic to twentyfive or thirty drops, & take care
to manage properly between this which may make him
[Page 2]
Costive & the use of the Laxative Pills. After a
fortnights intermission let him begin again to the Chalybeate
& Bark infusion & in diet take care to avoid all
flatulent food. I am &c.
