For Capt. Green
His ailments tho not dangerous yet distressing and
ready to increase at this season.
Take a journey of some length, & tho it would
be best on horse back yet from some circumstances of his
complaints & the present uncertainty of the weather we
shall not insist upon that but hope it may do in a
[Page 2]
carriage. The day's journey should be not more than three
stages but to be taken regularly every day unless the
weather be uncommonly severe. One stage before
breakfast & one or two before dinner. A little resolu¬
tion & a few days journey will make it easy for him
to get up so early. He should make his whole
journey before dinner if this should even be late.
Take light suppers & go early to bed.
Guard against cold & therefore be always well
covered, in his feet & legs especially. Never let
down a side glass unless absolutely necessary & then
do not sit next to it. Warm beds & dry linnen -
Diet: for breakfast tea & coffee are improper &
he had better take either Cocoa tea or a weak cho¬
colate or if he digest milk easily, this with an
equal part of water well sweetened with sugar
& with two or three teaspoonfuls of brandy or rum
in it may do for breakfast. Butter toast improper
but a little butter to dry toast allowable.
At dinner any plain solid meat he likes & make
up his meal with a bason of plain light soup
without any vegetable in it. He may also take some
light bread pudding without any fruit in it. Sparing
of roots or greens till his stomach is better & the
season of summer -
A little dry toast with negus may be enough
for supper unless he finds a demand, when however
it should be very light.
Drink - water or with a little strong wine in
it but must avoid all wine if his stomach is at any
time disposed to acidity, & take spirits & water.
He should take a little strong drink at dinner &
when his stomach is tolerably firm it may be red
{illeg} or madera; but the weak wines are not safe
[Page 3]
& indeed no kind of wine when his stomach is in any way
disordered, when his strong or weak drink must be
spirits & water. Upon the road, spirits safest as the
wines are uncertain.
Prescribed below is a medicine for strengthening his stomach
& nerves. 20 or 30 drops once before dinner a little, &
again about half an hour before time of supper.
In case of return of pains of stomach take a¬
long with {illeg} another medicine ordered below - Not to be
applied to upon every slight occasion but when severe
& lasting he may take a table spoonful & if this does
not relieve him in less than half an hour he may
take a second, & a third - but no more - & if it still
without effect, he must have recourse to Laudan
15 to 30 drops as occasion requires & experience suggests.
In case of costiveness, take at bed time {illeg} (↑one↑) or
two of the pills formerly prescribed.
If the better of his journey he should not rest
but go about from place to place as much as prescribed
for the whole of this spring.
Take two ounces of Tincture of Mars Label: Strengthening Tincture 20 or 30 drops in a glass of water twice a day.
Take one drachm best asafoetida, four ounces peppermint water dissolve and sieve, add two ounces each of rose water and spirit of cinnamon 120 drops of Thebiac Tincture, mix. Label: Anodyne mixture a table spoonful for a dose when the stomach is pained
