[Page 1]
To Sir J. Pringle Concerning Mr John Pringle

He has for many years past been liable to the Gout
& has often had it affecting his lower extremities
but never with any violence and commonly with more
swelling than pain. He has formerly been frequent¬
ly affected with want of appetite flatulance and
other marks of indigestion which seem manifestly connected
with a Gouty disposition - For some time past, the
affections of his Stomach have been less frequent
& more moderate, but for the same time, that is
for a year or two past, he has been frequently affected
with some difficulty of breathing which comes by fits
when it seems to be somewhat Spasmodic. It is
especially brought on by bodily exercise, & therefore
he walks very little, but bears a carriage tolerably
well. He has frequently a Slight Cough & spits up
a little Mucus
, but every morning as soon as he gets out

[Page 2]

of bed, he coughs a good deal & has a con¬
siderable expectoration. -- His pulse is a little
more frrquent than natural
but nowise conside¬
rably so & he does not complain of heat or thirst
His sleep is tolerable and his belly regular - He has
not long ago had a threatening of Gout in his feet
but it was a threatening only.

He has never had any Medicines from me
for the above complaints.

Edinburgh 23 November 1778 1

Notes:

1: This is an unusual method of indicating the date in the casebooks. It adopts the Roman method of counting back from the first-day (Kalend) of a month.
