Dr Mudie at Montrose about ↑Mrs Henderson↑ a Lady
Your fears of topical affection well founded. But
cannot determine the precise nature of it. I have
told you before (in a letter not transcribed) my reasons for
not immediately concluding it inflammatory & you af¬
ford me another by telling me that Opiates do not
increase her fever & if these dont give her much
relief, I suspect your dose is too small. I am sorry
that the lady refuses the blister, & if her pain re¬
curs with any violence you must insist upon it. You
are right in taking pains upon her belly but the pills
[Page 2]
you mention are too irritating & I think the
Aloetic pill of the Dispensatory 1 would answer.
I think Jalap well triturated with Cream of Tartar
as in the Pulv. ejalapp. comp. a much milder me¬
dicine than Colocynth or even Aloes & possibly she
might be reconciled to take that in a Bolus.
I make these observations in answer to yours &
