Captain James Maxwell.

Sorry to find you have so much ground of complaint. I can
not impute it to the Goat whey. nor think they will be mended
by taking the milk. I am apt to impute them to the warm
weather having affected your nerves and hurt your digestion
& I would particularly advise you to abstain from riding
or even being abroad during the heat of the day.

Send to Dunkeld for some doses of Magnesia sing. ʒſs .
take one of these with your whey for 2 or 3 mornings suc¬
cessive, & see if they mend your digestion relieve the weight
on your stomach & open your belly. If they do so, youmay
continue the Magnesia whey, taking the Magnesia every
2d or 3d day. If the Magnesia after two or three doses do
not relieve you you must lay aside the whey altogether &
thence determine how far the whey is the cause of your com¬
plaints & if this appear to be the case I will not insist on
your drinking it any longer. But I have an attachment

both to the whey and to the air you live in and therefore
would not have you desert either, rashly. If you are
easily vomited, a gentle one might perhaps reconcile
you to the whey. Avoid costiveness & if the Magnesia
do not answer, take your pills.
