First Letter for Mrs Duff

I consider it as a chronic Rheumatism commonly obsti¬
nate & tedious but not at all dangerous. The Medicine I would
chiefly recommend is Dovers Powder given in Dose of 20 grains
or more, in the morning when she is in flannel & laid in blank¬
ets & so managed as to raise a gentle sweat with as little heat as pos¬
sible, but kept up for 10 or 12 hours. If the right thigh does not
sweat let some flannel cloths strongly wrung out of boiling water
be laid upon it. The practice may be repeated two or three times
leaving 2 or 3 days between each sweat but in these intervals

[Page 2]

great care be taken to avoid cold. The sweating must
not be practised when Mrs Duff is either affected or threatened
with spitting of blood nor repeated if any spitting of blood
comes on. when
