For Sir James Norcliffe Bart.

A weakness in the bowels is his only ailment.

1. Whenever he is settled at home he should begin the use of the solution
ordered below. Take 2 tablespoonfuls of it & mix this with half an
English pint of spring water. This is to be taken at 2 or 3 draughts
in the morning before breakfast, leaving twenty minutes or ½ an hour
between each draught. He should by it have one stool every day
without purging, & if it either do too much or too little it may be
increased to 3 or diminished to one spoonful.

2. At the same time, take a dose of the Stomachic drops in a glass of
water twice a day –– viz an hour before dinner & supper.

3. Continue these for a month & no longer, but if he find them
of benefit he may repeat them in September next.

4. During this course, no change is necessary in his manner of living
but it will always be proper for him to give some attention to his
diet. On one hand avoid every thing heavy or of difficult digestion,
on the other all cold & flatulent foods. Avoid all malt liquor. He
may take any wine, if moderately.

5. Fresh air & being on horseback. Avoid violent exercise.
Avoid cold especially in feet & legs

6. With the medicines he may continue his rhubarb as usual only
taking care not to make the Solution too laxative. If it do
this, either give up the Rhubarb or diminish the Solution.

7. If in spite of all this his complaint continue to recur I advise
him to go to climate warmer & more uniform than that of Great
Britain, for the winter.

Take two ounces of Soluble Tartar, an ounce of Glauber's Salts, two drachms of Spanish Sea Salt, and 4 ounces each of simple Cinnamon Water and spring water. Dissolve, and strain through paper. Label: Aperient Solution.

Take two ounces of Tincture of Mars (Edinburgh Pharmacopœia). 2 Label: Stomachic drops.
