Dr Stevenson Concerning Mr Houston

After you had done so much I have little confidence
to say that his whole attacks have been owing to
Gout would be very bold; but I suspect Strongly
that besides the Disposition to Apoplexy there may
have been a Gouty Diathesis & Mr Houstons body
was certainly made for it - May not the sickness
in the morning which he has had within these 8
days be a Symptom of it? If it is not I think
it may be a Symptom of some water getting in
to the Thorax and the swellings of his legs
point that way - If you can enter into my
notion of the Gout I would try the Volat. Alkali
or a pretty large dose of the Spirit lavender compositus,
or joining ↑to↑ the Symptom of Gout those of a
Hydrathorax I would try a dose of Gin strongly
impregnated with Garlick & one or other of
these trials will direct your Course -- Continue
his Exercise but always carry him up stairs after
it - for [ten?] steps up a Stair will [undoe?] all his
Exercise - I suspect Gout so much that if any pains
return to his feet haunch legs or feet I would

[Page 2]

neither have blisters nor Anod. Balsam applied
to them. Query had he ever difficulty of breathing
till within these 8 days - Mark his urine.
