Dr Garioch
Dear Dr.

I am heartily concerned for your distress. I have
considered your story very [attentively?] & I have consulted
with Dr. Monro, upon the subject. We are of opinion
that the ailment of your foot is very entirely topical
and that little relief is to be expected from internal
medecines: and after the many trials you have made
of externals, we are not very confident in advising;
but we think the most probable is a vapour Bath;
confined to the leg & foot affected we must leave it to your
own ingenuity to continue the proper apparatus, & only say
that the best time for applying it is the evening that it
Should be always continued at least for an hour & commonly
longer; & that when it is finished great care is to be taken
to dry well & cover well with flannel. We suppose you
are attentive in preventing your leg & foot being ever in
a depending posture.

[Page 2]

And allow me to say, that it is not enough for you
to have your leg laid up upon a Stool when you are
sitting, but that you ought often to have your whole
body in a horizontal posture, with your leg & foot
laid higher than your body. We think it would be
also proper for you to wear constantly at least in
the day time a laced Stocking exactly adjusted and
gradually tightened from the Toes upwards & as closely
as you can easily bear. Till you either tell us
that you dont incline to try this management or
that you have tried it without effect. We will not
advise further & especially as you may at all
times command the best advise we can give you.
I am sorry you have so bad an opinion of my regard
to my Bretheren & old Pupils as to think it
necessary to send me money & I hope you will
excuse my returning it here enclosed. I am
for Dr. Monro, & Myself with great regard
