For Mr Shiels's Friend.
Case not so full as wish &c. but can perceive that it is a strong ner¬
vous affection particularly distressing by indigestion & flatulence. --
Little benefit
to be ↑got from↑medicines &
Tonic & Bitters long used may do
much harm. I hope he shall be the better of the climate of Bristol
& a regimen. The only medicine ↑I advise↑ is Bath water, & bathing in it,
but at the same time exercise every day horseback or carriage, but
towards winter guarding carefully against cold.
A costiveness in such cases, common, & must be removed by a
Laxative -- Gentlemans own experience. If at a loss I recommend
the

Castor oil.
For the flatulence, a draught of bath water will generally give
relief, but if some Carminative I recommend good Æther, but not too
frequently, therefore alternate with Peppermint or suchlike.
Diet. I need not be particular trusting that the Gentleman's own experience
will have taught him.
