To Dr Douglas. concerning Miss Dempster

The copious Menstruation must weaken her.
Therefore every means to prevent this ––––

Much in the country & in fresh air & riding for
the first two weeks after her period or even to the
end of the third, will be of service – & no exer¬
cise the week at the approach of a period.
Diet light. – Costiveness to be prevented but
Sal. Guiaic, rather too hot, and at least not to
be used towards the approach of a Period. – at that
time rather Sulphur, Cr. Tart. ↑or↑ Ol. Ricin.

Tho the pains of her stomach & knees better, yet not
quite gone & therefore Elix Guiaic may be necessary but
not to be used but when the pains of her stomach are
present. Seltzer water proper, both with & without Madeira
The Bark & Elix Vitr. very proper – but better before the period
than after it, unless the period weakened her very much
As her stomach bears it, better to give the bark in substance
than Decoction - but only for a week in one interval
If the Elix V. agrees with her stomach, by itself – she may
use it by itself towards the approach of a period or even
in the first days of it

{illeg}as you found in other letter, you was right in
abstaining from Dovers P. & it will not be necessary
unless the pains of her stomach & Joints return with
violence.
